Western Scene Progress Post - Week 1

Liam O'Hare

For this project we have to build out an entire western scene. Mine will be a general store, and we will be including in this scene the models from our last assignment, the "PropTrio" assignment. We are to take our primitive build of a scene and replace basic shapes with more detailed and textured assets. We will add lighting and collect renders of our nice scene.

Here is one reference image I will be using, I really like the shelves in the background as well as some of the items placed on them, I also want to achieve a similar look for my countertop.

This image is helpful because it has glass display cases, which was an idea I had since I had made a model of a revolver. I think I can have a display case featuring a few weapons and utility items for passerby cowboys. I also think this furnace will be helpful reference. This image even shows the ceiling and floor which is helpful to me, as it seems they have a specific look to them for me to achieve.

This week I didn't have much time to start on new models, but I wanted to set up the scene first, I started with a primitive scene that looked like this:

This was far too large for me to make every prop for, and the assignment is to choose one room. So I decided to focus on the downstairs room, where the main store would be located. I had to set up my scene for this first:

I set the walls facing inwards and turned on backface culling so I could see into the room. I removed everything that wasn't part of the downstairs room. Next I had to add in a human for proportions and my premade assets from the last assignment:

After rescaling the countertop and assets I had a scene that was properly scaled and ready to start being built. I didn't have much time this week to get as far as I would have liked to, but next week I plan on getting lots more done.

Problems I ran into included importing some of the assets over, not all of them worked properly so I had to go back and fix up a few textures. I also noticed I might need more space inside of my room for this to look good, so I ended up making the room larger too. Besides that, so far it's been smooth sailing.
