The open letter asking for a pause on AI neural network development is in my opinion necessary. This pause on development is good, however I believe it will put policymakers to the test on speed and thoroughness for creating policy to regulate AI's development. I am not entirely confident that 6 months will be enough time for policy and language to be established to properly regulate this technology. I do however think it is smart and a positive light for something that can be scary. It is not very often where technological progress is halted in the name of a better social ecosystem. I think this should be normalized more and seen as something necessary, especially with some of the emerging technologies of today that have the capability to drastically change things faster than we are able to perceive them.
This honesty with ourselves is required for us to deal with things. Not only does it push us to create laws, language, and discussion faster, but it also prompts us to take more time when it comes to technology. I believe too many people believe technology will self regulate, when this is never the case. The fears for Artificial Intelligence are well placed, especially when coupled with the social networks and economy that rule our world. It is wise to not only put things on pause, but give ourselves a deadline in order to better understand and think about what it is we would like from AI, rather than to allow these markets to openly expand into whatever lanes generate the most money. As of now, it is not hard to see fake news becoming even more widespread and lucrative with the ability AI has to generate falsities so quickly. We can easily see AI replacing many jobs, removing and complicating liability, taking up computational power, and more. It is important that we force ourselves to wrestle with these ideas before it is too late and damage has already been done to our world.
