Game Scene Final Project Post

Game Scene Walkthrough: https://youtu.be/Hp7j6I6lKt4

This game scene was a recreation of the map "Oasis" from the game Splitgate. We had five team members in total to create this scene.

The premise of this scene was a small Oasis in the middle of a dry desert. There are a few mysterious structures that you can explore in this scene such as the main set piece tower as well as the underground market and bridge. The player is forced to explore these structures as they progress through the level.

The large tower was meant to draw the player to the end of the level, it also introduces our small portal mechanic for our game scene. We also made sure to use some Unity Asset Store items to help decorate the environment, which was allowed on our project.

We wanted to communicate an atmosphere with intricate detail but also dried and worn by the desert atmosphere.

I was the team lead and texturer for this project. I had a really fun time honing my texturing skills and focusing in Substance Painter and Designer to create unique textures for this scene. Here's some examples of some of my favorite textures I built:

Reference from the real game:

The artists of our team were unable to finish very early for our programmer to completely implement everything, and this resulted in our portal gun having to be cut out. While our programmer had completed impressive portal gun mechanics for our scene he was not given enough time to bugfix for it to make it in the final game. This was a huge bummer and we want to make sure next time to leave more time for people in Unity to complete these functions. This is even more frustrating since Kade, our programmer, had warned us of this prior, yet we still couldn't complete our work in time.

This was the biggest problem of development that affected our final project the most. Beyond that we were fine and the project turned out great.

I plan to be bothering people more as a team lead in the future. I found complimenting team members and making sure they knew they were valued was something that I easily forgot to do, so I now know that that is very important as well. Even more important though is the value in checking in with members and constantly communicating with people. While it may seem redundant to ask about the same things, you would rather be an annoying team lead than one that isn't always up to date on what is happening in your project. This happened a few times though I quickly fixed it as I like to stay on track with my team.
