CAGD 330 - Blog Post 6

Liam O'Hare

This week wasn't the best for working on this project, I didn't end up getting very much done and I think I could have managed my time better. Instead of giving myself multiple days throughout the week to tend to this character I sat down for only two days. I only ended up completing the arm and part of the hand, I was hoping to complete the fingers and start detailing the core of the robot.

Overall proportions are good on this robots arm so far, though I had to make a lot of guesses to how certain parts looked. For example, the reference doesn't show how the shoulder joint looks, so I ended up guessing this part of the robot and making my own design:

I built this socket and upper arm link as one complete piece which is mostly done and only needs some damage and smaller details. I will get to those in my detail and damage passes. This socket fits well and the shoulder pad sits right on top of this main ball socket.

There is a good mating between the body parts and I hope to make it look even more seamless in detailing.

I am happy with how the arm looks and think I made good progress however I wish I was able to do more this week. Lots of other classes came up and I simply failed to manage my time well enough. After this week's game classes (470 and 495) have their sprints wrapped up I plan to put in time into this robot every day, perhaps in the mornings. If I can maintain this pattern I think I will be on a faster track for completion of this robot. Luckily, I do see the end in sight, I can see every part of the robot built now, and once I finish this hand I will be ready to detail pass everything in one final push for the high poly. Then I will be ready for retopology and unwrapping. I am not sure how long this will take. I plan to make many separate meshes to account for all of the moving parts as well as achieve a really high detail bake. I also plan to lay out some really good ID maps for texturing to achieve a really good look. I am anticipating three more weeks on this project. If I don't achieve this I will be using my thanksgiving break to finish this character up, rig them, pose them, build a platform, and get some great renders for my portfolio and art station!
