CAGD 330 - Blog Post 5

Liam O'Hare

This week I finished up roughing all of the parts out for Presley. I moved up the torso to the head, added my pipe assets, and started cleaning up the arm. I still have to finish some general shapes around the arms, and then I believe I am ready to move to polish and detail for the entire model.

Lots of torso adjustments were made to fit proportions. I changed the core piece by stretching, I resculpted the chest piece to have a less harsh angle, as well as fixed the color bone so it wasn't so large. I tried polishing during this phase but realized this only slowed me down as more changed and destructive brushes would be used. It was more helpful to let imperfections be and get to them later during an actual polishing and detailing workflow.

I also added some piping to this chest. The pipe in the 3D model was adjusted to make room for the arm's movement. This "modeler's dilemma" reappears frequently throughout this project where inconsistencies between the reference and model need to be made in order to have a more practical design.

Another example of this is on the head. I made lots of head improvements and additions to better fit the reference:

While the reference is very helpful in certain areas, other areas are problematic and impractical, such as under the back of the head.

This disk structure is much wider in the reference as it meets up with the back of the base mesh for the robot head. However, in doing this the width of the robot's head quickly becomes ridiculously wide. While I could have only scaled this disk in one direction to meet those requirements it didn't look as good:

So I chose to make the decision to push this mesh further back and retain its circular shape. There is a longer prism that comes back to meet this circle which will soon have a seamless meet with the disk.

I also wrapped up the back of the rough for the back of the robot. I had a lot of agency here and chose to simply follow the rough concept I drew for this when I started this project. I like how it looks and I think it will seamlessly mesh with the rest of the robot. In detailing I plan to add some glowing lights and creases so that this section matches the robot's torso/core piece.

I also did some touch-up on Presley's legs. Before they were too short. While the sizes don't match exactly here, keep note that this is due to the fact that the reference's legs are bend back. I made sure to extend both the thighs and the middle section of the leg in my model to better match the lengths.

Finally I did some more work on the arms, while they aren't finished I made sure to add all of the subtools for this piece as well as get some further proportions functioning.

Overall I am happy to see how this robot character is turning out, this is one of the first week's we can finally see a closer to final product for Presley, and overall I am really excited to see how they are turning out.
